Metallic Wallpaper

You know the saying, everything old is new again.  Everything comes back in style, whether it's fashion or design.  It just comes back in a revamped way.  So think 1970s metallic wallpaper but in a 2017 vibe.  Instead of lime green and orange, think silver and gold.  I'm starting to see more and more use of foil in wallpapers and I think if done in a good way, could last years and still not look dated.

I like this high contrast between the metallic wallpaper and rustic desk.  And can we just take a moment to look at his framed artwork?!

There is a lot going on in this photo, but everything is a neutral, except the stained glass windows. The golds, crystals, and silver highlight the art of the glass.

If you read any design magazines, or piddle around Pinterest at all you know that the powder room is the perfect place to add some wow.  They are normally small spaces so a little bit of wallpaper can add so much interest to the tiny room.  The powder room is also a great place to be a little bit more daring since it's not a room that is seen by just walking through your home.  Let's call it a "destination" room.  ;)

A perfect place for metallic wallpaper is the dining room.  A formal dining room is suppose to be just that, formal.  A space that is elevated to a higher level than the rest of your home.  It's suppose to be something special, and foiled wallpaper definitely achieves that.  Of course, don't forget your fifth wall, your ceiling.  Light bounces off your ceiling and a reflective foil wallpaper will bounce even more light into your space making it feel bigger.

This room is so calming, I'd take it in a heartbeat.  With two boys, anything to help with calming, i'm on board!

Yet again, blue and gold never disappoints.

Shagreen

Shagreen is the skin of rays or sharks.  It is a smooth material with a pebbled texture.  Using real shagreen became quite popular in the art deco era.  It was a sign of luxury and opulence.  Another reason I'm sure it was, and still is so popular is how durable the material is.  While real shagreen is still being used in very high end pieces, most shagreen nowadays is a leather or vinyl faux shagreen.  The faux is a near look alike in texture and durability.  Another bonus of a faux shagreen is the colorways are endless.  Shagreen is very popular in casegoods, accessories, and even wallpaper.  So, who wants to go shopping?  Because I'm obsessed, and especially with the chests and cabinets!!

And my most favorite shagreen piece is this chest.  I would happily take two of these for nightstands with a pretty spectacular canopy bed I have picked out if we ever settle down.  Brad, I promise if I get this bed it won't have to come in through the second floor master bedroom window.  But note the finish on the base and knobs.  A good way to spot a quality piece is to check out the finish.  Is it just spray painted or does it have depth in color and variations to it?

Thanks so much for reading!

Lindsay Cowles

I stumbled upon Lindsay Cowles' Instagram account awhile back and got lost in it.  I saw this bright, graphic, almost psychedelic wallpaper on the ceiling of a closet.  I thought to myself, I have never seen anything like this before.  I had my fingers crossed hoping to see more amazing work by her and luckily was not disappointed.

On Lindsay's website she is described as "a contemporary artist and decorative arts designer based in Richmond, VA.  She paints large-scale abstract oil paintings and digitally manipulates them into patterns for wall coverings, textiles and pillows."  Well, just one more reason to visit one of my best friends in Richmond, try to knock on Lindsay's door and get a tour of her studio.  I'd love to see how she creates these masterpieces.  I'm in awe of how art and technology blend, yet still have such a custom, unique and personal feeling.

I feel like the best way to see her wall coverings is to see them in an actual setting.  Her art is so dramatic and I think to get the true feeling of her work is to see it "workin'" a room.

She not only makes her art into wallpaper but also pillows!!!  I'm loving how in several of her pillows you can actually see the brush strokes.  Truly works of art in your home.  What's also so great about her wall coverings and pillows is they can work in almost any setting whether it be a traditional setting with fine antiques, a transitional home, or even modern home.  Her work is just so versatile.

Of course we wouldn't have any of her home decor pieces if Lindsay wasn't such a gifted artist.    Believe it or not, she's even self taught. Below are a few of my favorite of her available art pieces.
