Not Your Farmhouse Painted Floors

As much as I do love a good farmhouse with painted floors, I'm a bit more into sophisticated, high style painted floors.  Think Mary McDonald painted floors with bold geometric patterns.  Give me a good neutral, geometric floor and I'm off running with inspiration.  If you have old hardwoods that have seen better days, why not play around with a painted floor?  You have nothing to loose and it might buy you some time before you need to replace the floor.  And who knows, you might just fall in love with your new floors, you won't want to replace them!

A high impact foyer.  Remember, it's ok to paint your trim the same color as your wall color.  If the trim was painted white it would detract from the wall color and floors.  I'll never forget when Brad and I bought our first house and had to "hire" my father in law with pizza as his payment.  He helped us paint our family room.  I said, "paint everything the wall color, chair rail, baseboards and crown moulding."  You wanna know how many times he questioned me on that?  Let's just say a few ;) but when it was painted and the furniture in place he agreed with my decision.

I don't know if this is epoxy or what, but sign me up for high gloss floors!  And note how the pattern is also brought into the eat in kitchen under the table.

Music Keeps Me Spirited: Do You Feel Like We Do?

My most favorite Peter Frampton song is "Do You Feel Like We Do".  He's the master of the talk box and when he gets his guitar to "speak", it gets me every time.  Hearing songs like this make me so jealous I don't know how to play the guitar.  Just one more thing to add to the bucket list.

I recently heard this song in the car and the title made me think of how designers often post photos on Instagram of their shoes on a beautiful floor, often using the hashtag "I have this thing with floors".  So I ask, do you feel like we do?

Black and White Stripes

I don't don't think there's anything more classic than black and white.  I've noticed in the last few years that black and white horizontal striped walls are becoming quite the norm.  Although there is nothing wrong with those stripes I thought I would share some creative ways to change it up a bit to achieve a more unique and custom look.

A great way to change up the horizontal stripes is to turn them on the diagonal.

Laying the floor on the diagonal is a creative way to fool the eye into thinking the space is actually larger than it truly is.  Not only are you tricking the eye into thinking you're in a larger space but it gives your eyes visual interest.

The large wide stripe on the island helps to play up the diagonal stripes on the floor.  I'm also madly in love with those barstools.  I would so have those in my house, minus the black strands of our dog's hair that would immediately adhere to them.  At least the black would match?

I'm a firm believer that if you're going to go for "it", you go for "IT".  As in, go big or go home. When you have a special place like the foyer, a nook or a bathroom, these are great places to really show some personality.

Another great way to show personality and bring some modern, yet classic design is to bring the stripes outside.  You'll win over all your guests with them, trust me.
