Music Keeps Me Spirited: The 2018 Grammys

Oh the Grammys.  It's one of my favorite awards shows.  It's where a music video comes to life and fashion is pushed to the limit.  Think of the Met Gala but without a theme.  However this year there was an exception.  Many, if not most people at the show wore white roses to show solidarity in the movement against sexual harassment and assault.  A white rose was chosen because "historically it stands for hope, peace, sympathy and resistance."

BEST DRESSED LIST

For me, this wasn't my favorite Grammys but it was still enjoyable and there were some pretty great red carpet moments.  Of course, it was Queen Bee who ruled the Grammys on the fashion front.  Beyonce didn't even walk the red carpet, even missed half the show, but still came out on top.  The designer, Jebran said the "inspiration for the dress was rooted in the traditions of social justice.  The idea was to create a moment, a memorable design with meaning because it's more than just a gown."  Well create a moment he did!

All the rest of my Best Dressed list are ladies in pants.  It's the year of women.  We can be strong, yet feminine in a dress or pant suit.  But I sure am gravitating to seeing women in suits these days.

Anna Kendrick in a balmain suit and lace bodice.  I'm a big fan of balmain dresses but have never seen one of their suits.  But now that I've seen this I can't wait to see more!

This might be one of my favorite looks from Eve ever.  She's wearing a glittering Naeem Khan suit with chopard jewelry.  I think having such a soft look for her hair makes her outfit not look too hard and edgy.

Probably the second most prominent moment of the night for me was when Janelle Monae gave her speech about women's rights and equality .  She said "We come in peace but we mean business."  If that doesn't speak to what we as women are, and plan to take on, then I don't know what is.

Janelle Monae wearing dolce & Gabbana.  This look stopped me in my tracks.  it's a practice in restraint when it comes to both fashion and design.  How much can you push it without it being too much.  there's a definite fine line for sure.  This is a perfect example.  sure there is a lot going on in this outfit.  but if say the white ruffle sleeve wasn't there, I think you would feel the black needed to be broken up a bit.  She has a lot of rings but they are all for the most part simple, not blingy which had they been, would have been too much.

I'm so into Janelle's look I had to post a close up of her hair, makeup and jewelry.  Just look at that ear cuff!  I would wear that in a heart beat.

Common in Tiffany & Co. jewelry.  I'm normally not a fan of the velvet seen everywhere these days.  But this merlot color in velvet really shows the depth of the fabric and color.  It's a great pairing with the finish of his black pants.

PERFORMANCES

By far, the most prominent moment of the night was Kesha's ensemble performance with Cyndi Lauper, Camila Cabello, Andra Day, Julia Michaels, Bebe Rexha and the Resistance Revival Chorus.  They sang Kesha's song "Praying" which definitely "speaks to our times".  It was by no means Kesha's best vocal performance, but the way she sang it, with all emotions at the forefront, it was impossible not to be moved.

A tribute to Fats Domino and Chuck Berry by Jon Batiste and one of my favorites, Gary Clark Jr.  I'll tell you what, a guitar speaks to music heart.

Oh Sting, you are timeless and can I say, so sexy!!

Though not a "traditional" song, but a damn funny performance.  A take off of host James Cordon's carpool karaoke.

Again, not a song, but a funny "skit" that was a big hit with everyone in the audience and I'm sure many, many at home.

Thanks so much for reading!  Can't wait for Justin Timberlake's Super Bowl half time show on Sunday!!

Grammys 2016

As an avid music lover I can't wait for the Grammys each year.  It's my night to turn the TV up super loud, jam out and dance.  It's a good thing my boys are such sound sleepers because the volume is always UP on this night.  My friends know me all too well because shortly after the show started I received a text saying, "Are you in deep with the Grammys now?  I picture tears streaming out of your eyes, edge of your seat".  Well, there were no tears, but a few dance sessions.  I wouldn't say this was the best Grammy show, but there were still several stand out performances.

This year there weren't many shots of the audience during a performance.  I missed that this year.  It's always so fun to watch Taylor Swift standing and singing, and appreciating each artist.  I feel like so many times fellow artists just sit there during a performance.  Do they not know they're at the best concert of the year?!!

Ciara and her boyfriend Russell Wilson.  The grammys are one place where you can show some skin and get away with it.  Well, she's showing a lot of skin and rocking it!!  And props to her double sided tape, it's working wonders!

Unfortunately Adele, a favorite in this house, didn't have a great performance.  While watching there was clearly sound problems with not only her performance, but also Justin Bieber.  Now I could care less about Bieber, but come on, you can't have sound difficulties during a music award show!  Apparently piano mics fell on the piano strings during Adele's performance of "All I Ask".

Best Performances

There were several performances that were good, really good.  However I feel with the Grammys it's your time to shine and put on a "show".  Clearly the front runner for a knock out performance was Lady Gaga.  She did a performance honoring her idol David Bowie.  Simply put Gaga is a performer and can "get into character" and take the audience to another place.

Another tribute performance to a lost artist was performed by Chris Stapleton, Gary Clark Jr. and Bonnie Raitt.  They honored the King of blues, Mr. BB King.  I think he would have loved this performance and could imagine him swaying back and forth with his beloved guitar Lucille.  Just hearing the first few chords of "The Thrill is Gone", you can't help but truly feel the music and guitar.

Lionel Richie won Person of the Year and to honor this award there was yet another colaboration of artists singing his songs.  You have to love when the camera pans to Lionel and he's thinking they're doing amazing.  John Legend and Demi Lovato slayed it.

For me personally, I love a scaled back, acoustic version of a song.  Then put that on a small intimate stage, and well, you have my favorite moment of the Grammys.  James Bay and Tori Kelly, both new artists, did a mashup of their two most popular songs and it was perfection.

Hamilton the musical won for Best Muscial Theatre Album.  Lin-Manuel Miranda, the brain child of this never-been-done-before rap on Broadway is a genius.  And of course he raps his acceptance speech!

One of the funniest moments of the night was Stevie Wonder poking fun at the audience for not being able to read braille.  Before presenting the Best Pop Solo Award to Ed Sheeran, Stevie said, "we need to make every single thing accessible to every single person with a disability."  It's such a reminder of how much farther we need to go to as a country.

Leon Bridges was nominated for Best R&B Album.  Although he didn't win this year, I'm sure this new artist will be seeing a lot of Grammys in his future.  Squarespace hired legendary photographer Danny Clinch to make a short video showing his quick rise from a dishwasher in Fort Worth, Texas to a Grammy nominated artist.  Check out this new artist, I'm sure you'll too fall in love with his old sound.
