Project Margaritaville / Den and Screened Porch

I am excited to share another part of Project Margaritaville with you. You’ll see more of their personality and how it flows with the style of the home and environment.

Their main living space used to be two separate rooms however several years ago when they re-did their kitchen they knocked down the wall between the two spaces to make one large family room. However it is still broken up in two seating areas, one focused on their tv and the other, what I call the den portion, is still visible to the television but is nice for a quiet conversation also.

These clients entertain quite a bit and enjoy being outdoors so we added a large screened porch and patio to extend their outdoor entertaining months. We purposely didn’t put a tv on the screened porch so the fireplace would ultimately be center stage. However, not to be ones to miss out on watching the game we installed large wall to wall sliders to connect the porch to the indoors so they can still see the game on the tv inside. We then installed speakers so they can always hear the game or put their favorite tunes on and still enjoy the screened porch.

We installed a large dining table so the family can enjoy their meals outdoors or it can serve as a serving piece when entertaining large crowds. We sourced a reclaimed piece of wood and had it installed as our mantle. The warmth of the wood counterbalances the grays of the stone used throughout.

We designed the den around their existing rug and pulled out the reds and gold that are found in it then accented with shades of teal and green that’s also found in the rug. We wanted this space to feel a bit more elevated than the sofa area by the television but at the same time not too stuffy. We found that balance with a slip-covered sofa frame with loose back cushions. Another way we elevated this area is with the burlwood waterfall cocktail table and the gold in the side tables.

Another thoughtful choice we made was selecting side chairs that had interesting backs. This space is a walkthrough to the porch and from several angles you’re looking at the backs of these chairs. The chairs have a natural woven back to give some interest and bring in another material to the space.

The cozy den with its reds and golds flows seamlessly with the rest of the house. The mix of materials, especially the burlwood and gold side tables help elevate the space without being too drastic with the more relaxed spaces it’s attached to.

We punched up the marble side table with a slightly unexpected Tiffany blue lamp with a lacquered shade.

The screened porch is able to be enjoyed year-round with the help of a fireplace. By staining the ceiling verses painting, it helps bring your eyes out to the trees verses what a white ceiling would have done in this setting. We installed a reclaimed piece of wood for the mantle stained to match the ceiling to help draw the brown parts in the stone on the fireplace out.

Whether dining al fresco or simply having a drink by fire this screened porch delivers on serenity.

Proportion is key to so much of design. With the size of this porch it was important we select a large chandelier that truly fills the space. If ever you’re questioning whether you should go smaller or larger on a chandelier, my answer is always BIGGER. If you put a smaller chandelier in a room the room tends to swallow up the chandelier and it ends up looking even smaller than it actually is. So get a little uncomfortable and go for the bigger one. ;)

It was important we mixed warm and cool tones in this space. The existing exterior and interior of the home pulled more warm, but we wanted to give a nod to modern so we pulled grey stone in to this room to marry the transitional with modern.

The screened porch is able to be enjoyed year-round with the help of the fireplace and throws.

The Sunbrella fabric selected for the sofa also helps to merge the browns and grays found in the stone fireplace. The stripe, in those tones, brings a bit of a modern edge to the room.

The main feature of the screened porch is the stone fireplace and stained mantle. We selected cubes that can be pushed together to make a coffee table or pulled apart for extra seating or a foot rest.

We installed a new patio with a raised stained deck for dining al fresco and then a stone portion for grilling and s’mores by fire pit. The spaces expand perfectly with the screened porch and allow for even more space when entertaining for large crowds.

We had a custom fire pit made so when not in use they can put the top on and use it as a side table for cocktails. It has a nice patina that gets better with time the longer it sits outdoors.

The table’s center can either be an ice bucket or hold flowers and be a centerpiece arrangement for meals around the table.

Thanks for reading! If you have any rooms that need some love and attention reach out as we’re currently accepting new clients.
